Pattern 2 - Changing yourself

In 1931 Aldous Huxley wrote 'I wanted to change the world. But I have found the only thing one can be sure of changing is oneself'. Changing yourself is the second pattern of learning in my framework. This pattern is based on the intrapersonal dimension of learning. While the cognitive dimension has been described as 'learning as acquisition' this dimension is about 'learning as becoming'. Here the emphasis is on your attitude.

Those of you who have studied emotional intelligence will recognise the intrapersonal dimension as one of its two elements and it also resonates with Stephen R. Covey's 'circle of concern'. Pattern 2 is about being resilient and remaining positive; about looking ahead with an open mind and trying out new ideas; about having self-belief. Self-belief can be challenging for all of us. For example, if your confidence is significantly lower than your competence you might not put yourself forward for a possible opportunity. If your confidence is significantly higher than your competence your success may be only short-term. I found from my research that what really helps is to have your confidence and competence in balance. When facing any issue the question to ask yourself now is, 'How might your attitude be holding you back?
