The status quo is the first pattern of learning in my
framework. This pattern of learning
helps you be a competent professional.
It is based on the cognitive dimension
of learning and its focus is on having and applying up-to-date knowledge and skills.
If your learning covers all four triangles in pattern 1 you
should have credibility with your clients and with any bodies that regulate the
activities in which you are involved.
While attending courses and conferences is the most visible part
of the learning iceberg, as a professional it is critical that your learning
encompasses all four of the areas in pattern 1. And that you recognise and talk about all
those aspects of your learning.
However if you wish to be successful there is more to
learning than pattern 1. To be a complete professional you need to consider
‘changing oneself’ (pattern 2) and then ‘changing the world’ (pattern 3).
